Samsara’s technology is officially ‘out of this world’ after it was launched into space attached to a high-altitude balloon. 

All four components that made up the module were standard Samara products that normally are installed in lorries, vans and other pieces of equipment. The entire mission was tracked using GPS technology from start to finish. 

The payload included a high-definition dual-facing dash cam, an asset tag used to locate small items such as tools and equipment, an environmental monitor to capture temperature and a vehicle gateway to link them all together and provide live GPS tracking, diagnostics and analytics.

Launched in the Nevada desert southwest of Las Vegas in May 2024, Samsara’s stellar tech — attached to a specially designed 3D-printed carbon fibre frame — reached a peak altitude of 104,461ft before being parachuted back to Earth. During its two-hour flight, it survived recorded temperatures of -58.9F 

"These kinds of experiments are fun and creative ways to push our products to new heights. It certainly gave us a new perspective on things", said David Gal, VP, Product & Engineering at Samsara. 

Once the biodegradable balloon popped, the module’s descent was tracked using GPS technology. Shortly after it landed it was located in a bush by the support team using the same GPS tracking technology and mobile phone app used by Samsara customers around the world.
