This year’s Road Safety Week — the UK’s biggest annual road safety campaign organised by the charity Brake — is to focus on road crash victims and is designed to help people understand the devastating effects of road crashes while highlighting the work of those who support road victims.

Speaking at its annual reception at the House of Commons, Brake CEO Ross Moorlock, explained about the work of the charity and the “importance of those in power acknowledging and recognising the scale of the issues on our roads.”

“Seventeen hundred people will die on the UK's roads this year. Another 30,000 will suffer serious life-changing injuries,” said Mr Moorlock.

“These numbers are shocking, and there has been no significant reduction for more than a decade now.

“But road casualties are not just statistics. Behind every number is a family in turmoil — a grief-stricken family trying to navigate its way through the complex procedures that often follow a road crash. Behind every number is a family whose lives have been changed forever in an instant, a family that needs our help.

“This Road Safety Week, we will be counting the real cost of road crashes, revealing the stories behind the numbers, and calling for the highest standard of care for road victims because, after the crash, every road victim counts,” he said.

Samsara is committed to road safety

The work of Brake is something that is fully endorsed by Samsara. The company is a Strategic Partner of Brake and provides significant funding for the charity.

As part of that commitment, Samsara sponsors Brake’s annual Fleet Champions Awards aimed at safety-conscious fleet operators, suppliers, manufacturers and individuals to recognise the achievements of those working to prevent crashes and reduce pollution caused by work vehicles.

This year, Samsara is sponsoring the Fleet Driver of the Year category, something that mirrors its own mission to improve the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of operations that power the global economy.

Last year, the theme of Road Safety Week focused on excess speed — one of the ‘Fatal 5’ causes of serious injuries and death on our roads.

Writing at the time, Samsara Senior Vice President and General Manager, EMEA, Philip van der Wilt, said: “Although the campaign is aimed at all drivers, Samsara’s position in the world of transport and physical operations — and our ongoing drive to make the world a safer place — means Road Safety Week is firmly on our radar.

“Safety — along with efficiency and sustainability — is one of the three core pillars of what we do as a company. Our technology is designed specifically for commercial fleets with the simple aim of keeping people — both inside and outside of our vehicles — safe,” he wrote.

Road Safety Week runs from 17 to 23 November 2024. To sign up and get free resources to help you take part, go to Brake | Road Safety Week.
