The RUBICONSmartCity team reports that since launching its partnership with Samsara, it has delivered substantial results for major cities across the United States, notably helping the City of El Paso, TX save 8,000 miles annually and eliminate 45,000 pounds of CO2 emissions.

The company’s deep understanding of the public sector sets them apart from competitors and has led to its successin supporting the operations of complex, heavy-duty municipal fleets. Offering a complementary solution to Samsara’s Vehicle Telematics, RUBICONSmartCity and Samsara discovered their mutual customer base would experience greater benefits using the solutions together. Their collaboration provides local governments such as the cities of Phoenix, AZ, El Paso, TX, and Austin, TX, with a comprehensive solution for managing their operations.

When the City of Austin was evaluating technology providers, including RUBICONSmartCity and Samsara, it became clear that a combined solution would best meet the city's needs. With the Samsara and RUBICONSmartCity partnership, the City of Austin found a complete solution that solved their challenges. “We knew we could improve our customer data, improve accuracy, and reduce the number of times customers have to request redundant services. With the newly implemented Samsara and RUBICONSmartCity systems, we can better manage these areas and improve our customers’ experience,” said Landry Wilson, Senior IT Analyst, City of Austin.

When RUBICONSmartCity was deciding to partner with Samsara, ensuring alignment in customer experience was top of mind. Samsara’s easy deployment, transparency throughout the sales process, and shared dedication to customer success impressed RUBICONSmartCity and confirmed the partnership would be successful.

Now, customers can integrate their Samsara GPS data, vehicle data, and safety events with RUBICONSmartCity to consolidate systems and improve efficiency. Real-time fleet tracking enables route optimization and timely service delivery to streamline operations and reduce costs. Additionally, users gain comprehensive insights for informed decision-making and waste management optimization—customers can track waste collection and recycling rates, monitor driver behavior for safety and compliance, automate reporting, enhance customer service, and support sustainability initiatives.

While Samsara Vehicle Gateways installed in city vehicles fuel the integration, securing driver buy-in can be challenging. In participating cities such as Austin and Phoenix, Samsara Implementation Specialists worked directly with drivers and system administrators to train them on the solution. “Samsara understood our industry and challenges. They knew how to talk to our workforce and get buy-in, which is essential when you're implementing a new system with a large driver pool,” said Wilson. “Not only do the drivers find it easy to use and functional, but decision-makers have what they need at their fingertips very quickly.” Moreover, a quick deployment was vital to the City of Austin. With Samsara’s and RUBICONSmartCity’s seamless implementation, the integration launched just three months after kickoff.

RUBICONSmartCity and Samsara’s combined efforts have streamlined operations, reduced costs, and enhanced service delivery in multiple cities, showcasing a model of collaboration and innovation. The integration enables customers to save time previously spent checking multiple systems while gaining a holistic view of their operations. “The integration between RUBICONSmartCity and Samsara has been entirely seamless. I'm unaware it's there, except when someone asks me about it,” said Wilson.

Additionally, by optimizing routing, reducing idle times, and enhancing fleet operations, the partnership supports cities' goals to reduce their environmental footprint and promote more sustainable urban environments. For example, in the City of El Paso, RUBICONSmartCity and Samsara’s joint solution led to a 27% reduction in stationary time per hour, saving approximately 8,000 miles annually. These improvements resulted in fuel savings of $12,500 and reduced CO2 emissions by 45,000 pounds.

In the City of Austin, the partnership has been instrumental in improving services by helping the city manage its fleet more effectively and ensuring that public service vehicles are efficiently maintained and optimally routed. “Having partners like Samsara and RUBICONSmartCity makes it considerably easier to tackle complex issues. Samsara is incredibly reliable—I know the results are accurate, and I can troubleshoot much faster,” said Wilson.
